ForumApps Alternative: Own Your XenForo App Instead of Renting It

ForumApps is a legitimate hosted service that has been turning XenForo forums into native apps since around 2017. If you want a fully managed app and don’t mind a monthly bill that never ends, it is a reasonable product. But over three years its plans cost $2,844 to $7,164 — while a one-time license costs $199 to $499, and the app is yours.

This page compares the two models honestly, using only facts we verified on forumapps.net as of July 2026. Where we couldn’t verify something, the table says so instead of guessing.

Renting vs owning: the real difference

Feature lists matter less than the business model underneath them, so start there.

The subscription model (ForumApps). You pay monthly, ForumApps hosts and manages the app, and you never touch a build pipeline. The trade: the app exists as a service you rent. No tier includes source code, and the base tier carries ForumApps branding and their platform ads.

The one-time license model (us). You pay once. The apps are published under your own developer accounts, installation and updates are included, and the Extended license hands you the complete Flutter source. The trade: the store accounts are yours to hold, which means a $25 one-time Google fee and Apple’s $99 per year.

Three questions separate the models faster than any feature grid:

  • What happens to the app if you stop paying?
  • Who owns the store listing and the developer account?
  • Can you ever get the source code?

If those questions matter to you, keep reading. (For the technology side of the decision — native builds versus wrapped websites — see native app vs web wrapper.)

The three-year cost table

Forum owners keep their communities running for years, so compare on that horizon:

OptionPricing3-year total
ForumApps — Thread tier$79/month$2,844
ForumApps — Sub Forum tier$99/month$3,564
ForumApps — Forum tier$199/month$7,164
XenForo Mobile App — Regular$199 one-time$199
XenForo Mobile App — Extended (full source)$499 one-time$499

ForumApps pricing as of July 2026, from forumapps.net. Store developer fees (Apple $99/year, Google Play $25 one-time) apply whenever apps are published under your own accounts, regardless of vendor.

Put differently: the Regular license costs less than three months of ForumApps’ cheapest plan, and at year three the gap ranges from roughly 14x to 36x.

Who should still pick ForumApps

An honest comparison names the cases where the other product wins, so here they are:

  • You want zero maintenance. ForumApps is fully hosted. No developer accounts to manage, no builds to publish, no submission checklists. That convenience is real and it is what the subscription buys.
  • You prefer a monthly operating expense over a one-time purchase, for budgeting or cash-flow reasons.
  • You value a long track record as a hosted service. ForumApps has operated in the XenForo ecosystem since around 2017.

If that describes you, ForumApps is a fair choice and we won’t pretend otherwise.

Choose the one-time license instead if you care about total cost over the years, source code access, the social layer (chat, stories, marketplace), instant remote reconfiguration via App Control, or — for agencies — the right to rebrand and resell with the Extended license.

Switching from ForumApps (or starting fresh)

The most important fact about switching: your community’s data never lived in the app. Threads, members, messages — all of it sits in your XenForo database and stays there. Replacing a mobile app means replacing a client, not migrating a community.

The path looks like this:

  1. License and build. You buy the license, we build the apps with your branding and configure the XenForo side — installation is included.
  2. Publish under your own accounts. Google Play is $25 one-time (with a closed-testing step for new personal accounts); Apple is $99 per year with a TestFlight beta before launch. The specifics are on the XenForo Android app and XenForo iOS app pages.
  3. Run both in parallel. Keep the old app live until the new listings are approved and announced. No gap for members.
  4. Announce and sunset. Post the new store links on the forum, then retire the old app.

Frequently asked questions

Is ForumApps a bad product?

No. It is a hosted, managed service with a long history in the XenForo ecosystem, and for owners who want zero maintenance it does its job. The comparison here is about the model — renting versus owning — plus the features we ship that their public materials don’t document, like chat, stories, marketplace and App Control.

What happens to my app if I cancel a ForumApps subscription?

As with any hosted subscription, the app depends on an active plan, and ForumApps does not publicly document a post-cancellation policy — ask them directly before signing up. With a one-time license, the builds are published under your own store accounts and keep working; Extended license holders also hold the full source.

Does any ForumApps tier include source code?

No. As of July 2026, no ForumApps tier offers source code access. Our Extended license ($499 one-time) includes the complete Flutter source with rebrand and resell rights, which is the difference between using an app and owning one.

How disruptive is switching for members?

Minimal. All content lives in your XenForo forum, so nothing migrates. Members install the new app and sign in with their existing forum account via OAuth2. The real work is communication: announce the new app, link the store listings, and retire the old one on your schedule.

Pay once, own your forum’s app

The Regular license is $199 one-time — less than three months of ForumApps’ cheapest plan — and covers iOS and Android builds, installation, 6 months of support and updates. The Extended license is $499 and adds the full Flutter source with rebrand and resell rights. Demo apps are live on both stores via our homepage, so you can judge the product from your own phone before deciding.
