iOS is where the gap between “good enough” and “native” is widest, because Apple makes the web route genuinely hard for forums. Here is the honest picture.

The iPhone problem: why the free PWA falls short

XenForo’s built-in PWA is good, and it’s free — we say that without hedging. On Android it covers a lot of ground. On iOS it runs into a wall that has nothing to do with XenForo.

iOS has supported web push since 16.4, but only for sites the user has manually added to the home screen through Safari’s share sheet. Not installed the normal way — the user has to find the share icon, scroll the sheet, and tap “Add to Home Screen”. Almost no visitor performs that step, and most don’t know it exists. So on iPhone, PWA push reaches only the small minority who complete a manual ritual they were never told about.

A native app inverts this. Members install from the App Store like any other app, the app asks for notification permission once, and they tap Allow.   1. Join the Apple Developer Program from your own account — $99 per year, paid to Apple, not to us. This is a cost every iOS app on the store carries, whoever builds it.

  3. TestFlight beta. Your members test the real app on real devices before the public sees it.

Frequently asked questions

Doesn’t the XenForo PWA already support push on iOS?

Technically yes, practically rarely. iOS 16.4 and later delivers web push only for sites the user has manually added to the home screen via Safari’s share sheet — a step most visitors never perform and don’t know exists. A native app asks for push permission with one tap during normal use, which is why its opt-in reach is in a different league.

Will Apple reject the app under guideline 4.2.6?

Guideline 4.2.6 targets template apps submitted in bulk from a single provider’s account. Our model publishes each app from the forum owner’s own Apple Developer account, with the owner’s branding and content — the arrangement the guideline requires. The app is also a differentiated native product, not a wrapper, and we guide the submission and review notes.

What does iOS cost each year?

The license itself is one-time: $199 Regular or $499 Extended. The only recurring cost is Apple’s Developer Program at $99 per year, paid directly to Apple from your own account. There are no monthly fees from us and no per-member pricing.

Is Android included too?

The Regular license is $199 one-time: iOS and Android builds, installation, 6 months of support, updates. The Extended license is $499 and adds the full Flutter source code with rebrand and resell rights for agencies.
